I (xvi) would suggest another maxim, which would be never to think of getting rich until the prince and the people have achieved what can be called public opulence. Then, neither they nor their children would ever lack wealth; instead, they would infallibly share in what they have established. They could even be assured of a bonus from the prince, and this benefit would be due to their merit, acquired with justice, and safe from public envy. I strongly hope that some financiers (xvii) would listen to me and take my advice, but regardless, I will propose my ideas on the wealth of princes and their States and the simple and natural ways that one must use to achieve it.

Je (xvi) leurproposerois une autre maxime, qui seroit de ne jamais penser à s'enrichir, qu'après que le Prince & les peuples auroient été mis dans une situation qui se puisse appeller Opulence publique; alors ni eux ni leurs enfans ne manqueroient jamais de biens, mais ils participeroient infailliblement à ce qu'ils auroient établi : Ils pourroient même être assurez de la gratification du Prince, & ce seroit un bien dû à leur merite, acquis avec justice & à covert de l'envie du public.
